Ashley frowned at the chunk of plastic she held, contemplating tossing it across the room as she died yet again.  ”Remind me again why we can’t just use a holo-interface for this, Shepard?”  ”Because,” he replied, mashing buttons on his own controller, “It’s all part of the experience.”  Ashley rolled her eyes, picking up the game’s box and examining it.  ”These don’t even look like real aliens.  They’re ridiculous.”  Shepard scowled as his character was gunned down too.  ”C’mon Ash.  It’s an antique game.  Of course it’s not scientifically accurate.”  Ashley snorted as her character died again.  ”Fuck Halo, Commander.”   

30 Day OTP Drabble Challenge Day 2: Cuddling Somewhere

She stood at the window, gazing out at the stars as the Normandy sliced through the vacuum of space, racing towards Earth.  Shepard watched her as he poured out a couple of glasses.  Worry lines near the corners of her eyes that hadn’t been there when they’d picked her up from Eden Prime.  New scars visible on her arms, her neck.  He carried the glasses over, handing her one as she nodded her thanks.  Standing behind her, he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close, and kissed the top of her head.  “I’m glad you’re back, Ash,” he whispered.

30 Day OTP Drabble Challenge Day 1: Holding Hands

“Hey Skipper,” Ashley said, looking up from her book, “what if… what if we don’t win?  What if we can’t beat them?”  Shepard sighed and put down his mission report.  He picked himself up and went to sit next to Ashley on the couch.  ”What’s on your mind, Ash?  You don’t think we can take ‘em?”  Ashley started to speak, but cut herself off, instead shaking her head mutely.  ”Sometimes not,” she whispered.  ”There’s so many of them, and so few of us…”  Shepard reached out and took her hand, fingers gently intertwining.  ”We won’t lose, Ash.  Don’t give up.”

Shepard crossed his arms, leaning back as he sized up the other captain.  ”Look, I’m just sayin’,” said Mal, “Your ship is top of the line and not falling apart every time you hit atmo.  I have to be a little tougher on my engineer than you do, is all.”  

“I’m not just talking about how hard you run your engineer,” replied Shepard.  ”What about that mercenary thug of yours?  Cobb?  He’s only there because you’re paying him more than the other guys, and you hit him in the face with a wrench.  That’s a good way to inspire some divided loyalties when push comes to shove.”  Mal just shook his head.  ”You’re military, Shepard.  You say frog, and everybody jumps, because it’s been bred into them through years of training.  Only one on my boat with those kind of instincts is Zoe.  In my world, it isn’t as easy as just giving orders and expecting them to be obeyed.  You’ve got to reach a guy like Jayne a different way.” Shepard scratched the back of his head.  ”By… hitting him with a wrench?”  ”Well,” said Mal, shuffling his feet awkwardly, “Yeah, sometimes.  It’s an alpha male thing.  Wouldn’t expect a guy like you to understand.” 

A conspiratorial grin spread across Shepard’s face.  ”I don’t know about wrenches, but I did punch a reporter once.  Or… three times.  Well, the last one was a headbutt.  But the principle is the same, right?”  Mal blinked twice.  ”Uh… yeah.  Ok.  That’s sort of the same, I guess.”  He took a prudent step back.  Marines.  It was like talking to a box of rocks.  If the rocks had guns.  ”Close enough.”
